Their chief aim was to demonstrate their different approaches to developing a vernacular architecture for New Zealand. Each lecture began with a broad overview of New Zealand to give their audience an understanding of the context and the origins of their work. “It was very relevant”, said Thompson, “that they understood the landscape our architecture develops from, building up from archetypal forms that indicate the architectural fabric of the country”. The tour was initially conceived as an architectural discussion in Chicago, but it became an extended series of lectures throughout America. There were eight lectures, one public and seven at different universities, among them SCIARC (Southern California Institute of Architecture), Yale University, New Haven, and City College of New York in Harlem, New York City.
